An interesting tree which I think would have benefited from a more pleasing composition. Perhaps a shot that wasn't taken so close to the tree, and framed in such a way that you could avoid including the bright and blown out sky.

WOW! Although a bit of info would be appreciated. I would have prefered the tree a little off centre for a better compisition.

Wickedly contorted old tree. Nice find. How much more of it is there? Looks a bit chopped off at the top, but I'm sure you were trying to minimize the amount of sky messing up your exposure. There's a good bit of CA where the BG trees meet that sky as well.
This would have been a good time for fill flash. Expose for the sky (and thereby be able to include the rest of the tree) and light up the tree with a couple of flashes. I realize that you personally might not have the gear, but it's something to keep in mind. And good reasons to get a couple of flashes... *grin*
