Post-Processing:
Cloned out foot of tripod from corner of pic and one small piece of dirt from the concrete floor. Dehaze on duplicate layer, masked to rock only. Dehaze layer duplicated (still within masked group), set to 'Screen' blend mode at 40%. Mask set to 70%. Dodged part of rock (overlay layer). HSL layer to slightly desaturate blues. Curves layer to lighten a little. Slight crop top and right.
Extra Info:
Sung by Elvis something-or-other. ;-)
Two lights: one casting the shadow of the bars and the other to fill in blue.
The toughest part of shooting this was auditioning for the rock. I’d gathered half a dozen hopefuls together, and was looking for a personable boulder that could give a passable portrayal of both wistfulness and resignation. Not too much to ask, you’d think, but all they wanted to do was tap-dance or sing numbers by Celine bloody Dion. Good grief…

Nionyn, It is just something about your lighting :) Well done!
I also forgot to add the ' The king ' as part of my original comment ( never mind ) .. one day I'll try and get my comments to make sense first time around....good luck if you enter the next challenge!

Tancalvin, Plebian, Kees and Brisbane: good to hear from you again - and thank you.

LOL. For what ever reason I had a wild guess that this one might have been yours, I should have called it. Well done on 2nd, my no 4.

Wow! What a lot of lovely comments – thank you all. :-)
The blue rock: Ah, I’m sorry, it would appear that I did not explain myself clearly. The rock (about 18”/45cm long, by the way) is just a grey and brown rock from the garden – the blue came entirely from the coloured light placed beneath the tripod for fill-light. Why blue? It just seemed right somehow – ask Plebian. ;-) (Lawrence, mate, you’ve done it again! :-) )
Istra & labang2: I love the idea of ‘wayward punk rocks’! Hee hee! The ones round here are OK if you catch them when they’re still pebbles, but the adolescent boulders throwing their weight about can be a liability. And that’s even without their dodgy musical taste… I blame the parents, myself… ;-)
Brisbane: Presley? Are you sure? Nah, sorry Paul, never heard of her... ;-)
shudder: Thanks! I may make light of those auditions now, but they were a nightmare! You have no idea… ;-)
Buckshot: I do hope I did your wife’s idea justice. :-) Sorry you ran out of time on this one. Then again I’ve seen your photos – hell, I’ve voted for your photos – I think I’m lucky you didn’t enter! Hope you’ll find enough time to enter again next month. :-)
Bilbo: Thanks. :-) Cheesy? LOL! Yes, I admit it, you’re absolutely right. Damn, and there I was thinking I’d got away with it… ;-)
Chefziggy: Thanks :-) I agree with you about the blue detracting from the feel of a cell (wish I’d thought of your TV idea – love it!), which is why I desaturated the blue area a little. In retrospect I think perhaps I should have done a bit more there – or used a slightly different colour on the light.
dinnatouch: LOL! Excellent – thanks for the laugh! :-) Yeah, I knew the comp/space would not please everyone. I did try a couple of other comps but this is the one that had the feel and mood that I was after.
Levee Linda: Thanks! I always enjoy reading your comments (and I believe you comment on all pics too – good on you, and good for us!) but in this instance I know you have me confused with somebody else… ;-) Rock on! :-)
jjdorsey57 & Brisbane: Gentlemen, I thank you for your indulgence, and promise I shall never mention that dreadful woman again. ;-)
Thank you all again - there were a lot of good photos in this challenge, and I really appreciate your kind and complimentary words.
Cheers,
Nionyn

I like the time, effort and imagination you've put into this picture. It is in my top 3 for sure, not sure of my top shot yet, as I wait to make my final choice.

Nicely done. Well fitting of the challenge topic. The blue light is a nice touch but for some reason takes away from the idea that this is inside a jail cell. (Oh wait...that's the glow of the color TV, isn't it?)

Excellent shot! Very nice idea, and executed very well. The fill in light to get the great blue colour of the rock has work vert well. Good PP work as well. This one should do very well... good luck!

Very original idea! Nice image. I must say we don't have many blue rocks in my neck of the woods, but I haven't been holding auditions recently either....so who know's what those punk rocks are up to these days ;)
Your in my favorites, good luck!

I love this photo. Not only humorously fits the song title, but stands well on it's own also. A photo with rich blues and browns will get my vote every time. Well done.

In my TT.

It's good to see correctional institutions giving inmates like yourself a means to pursue a hobby ;-)
I'm affraid the straight diagonal comp doesn't really do much for me, there's too much wasted space for my taste.

With that much verbiage in the post-processing and extra info, I'm going to be surprised if this isn't shudder's. Regardless, this photo is an original take on the challenge and is nicely done. The colors are good and the photo is nice and clean. Well done - in my top ten.

The blue rock was a good choice. Blue Suede Shoes, Blue Hawaii, Blue Christmas, Moody Blue, Mean Woman Blues, Blue Moon of Kentucky, etc. Imaginative take on the song title, Jail House Rock. Good comp and I like how the light flares wider as it moves down into the frame. Shows depth nicely like this. Good exposure. That and comp certainly gives this rock the look of doing hard time in solitary fashion. Good job!

it did the double for me, i laughed as soon as i saw it and then really laughed when i read your info, don't know if people will go for it (not everyone has a sense of humour) but you've got the added advantage of having taken an excellent photo around a song title (which was the challenge, unfortunately some people seemed to have wrongly interpreted this but your's is spot on.
The bar shadows are not to strong which i like and the texture and colour of the rock and floor add plenty. good luck.

LOL. ( Good grief, Jail House rock is sung by 'Elvis Presley my good friend and don't you forget it :)
Nothing to add here except this presents nicely. Your idea and the way in which you have set this up works very well right down to your getting the perfect rock. IMF

What is happening to these rocks nowadays...I have a few wayward ones just laying about here not doing anything!! of all things.
I like your interpretation of the the song and it is well executed. Well done. In my faves for now.

I think your audition produced a very stageable rock, but it looks a bit blue...

Although I am not a great fan of 'funny' wordplay (I use it myself all the time but that is OK ;-) ), I like the indirect way of displaying the jailhouse part by ways of shadows. Very clever.

Of all the rocks that auditioned.... why the blue one?

Elvis jumps right out of this image! Terrific idea & excellent execution. Detail, colors, camera angle, and color/tone are spot-on. Composition is excellent although, I might have cropped off (tighter) a bit from the top.

This is in my TT and should do well.
