Some nice detail and texture in places, but overall way too busy for my tastes.

Tangled is very true :-)
There is so much clutter here that it tends to obstruct the texture. Getting in nice and close so that the texture become the feature would be an improvement - the bark on this tree clearly has a lot to offer, so the best advice is to get in close, and fill the frame with the subject. This isn't always easy to see though, especially when you are out in the cold looking through the viewfinder. As you develop your eye, you will be better able to analyse the composition while you shoot - well I hope so anyway, 'cause I still take a huge number of boring pics 8-D
Your post processing seems to have worked quite well though, a little extra sharpening might be nice in some places but overall it came out quite well.

I'd like to have seen more of a closeup of the bark with some moss. IMHO. You title fits the pic very well though.

I think I am aware of what you want to do - i tried a version of this before I submit something else. It could have been better if it is not too busy with so much branches.

With photos of parts of a tree, you have to be careful not to shoot too much together I think. Here, I am not sure where you would want me to look and the whole looks too busy both in the fore- and background.

I tend to want too much in shooting photos, taking everything into the frame totally, and often end up with busy pics with no specific point of reference. Here, you may have suffered the same.

Can be difficult when you have lots of twigs in front of your area of sharp focus. In the end I found the pic too busy. Maybe a close shot on one of the thicker branches with small depth of field may have worked better.

this is definitely an unusual entry. At first bluch is simply a mess. But, after a moment, I am trying to take this pic in on its own terms. It is very busy -- that's a given, and not normally a compositional plus. However, I believe you are attempting to use that busy-ness to create the texture out of the sheer cacophony of it. And I think it is successful to some degree. I just wish I could get a bit more involved in it, but it's not really reeling me in on any sort of storytelling level. I may have to come back to htis one in a while to reassess...

This is a terrific camera angle. I like the picture but the 'texture' link is (IMO) a bit weak.
